Director’s Word:
Manuscripts burn. There is no happy ending. While dreaming of utopian peace and tranquillity, we realize we are already dead. It was not God who consumed us, the human society did. If we believe in the devil, we must also believe in God, and vice versa. This is not a question of religion but of phenomenology. Still, you don`t play with the devil. The bill has to be paid. What does man do? Man does nothing. Man is sold. He has sold himself and acts accordingly. If we believe in love, we still defy. We defy ideologies and human order. We dream of freedom. But that is not true. We dream of peace and tranquillity. The devil is toying with us. And man plays. In the theatre. In that delicate space where freedom and truth reside. Until everything burns down…

From the reviews:
One needs a handful of misfortune and a grain of lucidity to create good art. In case of The Master and Margarita, it was necessary to transfer the era of ominous men in leather coats, who notoriously knock on doors at three o`clock in the morning and smell of Siberia and the gulag, to the present day and convince us that we are living in a new, global prison camp, despite the advertising agencies telling us ours is the best of all worlds. Director Andraš Urban succeeded in doing so.
