The play The Human Voice by Jean Cocteau is one of the most frequently interpreted works by other artists. This provocative monodrama invites discussion on many topics and calls to be reinterpreted in every era, as well as today. The voice of a woman during a nervous breakdown trying to find meaning and logic in her emotional collapse becomes a search for identity. What happens if this dramatic text becomes a personal statement or pseudo-opera that transforms into an abstract sound installation? Who does my human voice belong to?
The “Jurislav Korenić” Award of the Kamerni teatar 55 Festival in Sarajevo was presented to Jug Đorđević for the production The Human Voice, with the following explanation:
“In an ambitious reading of Cocteau’s text, the director shapes the stage not as a space of passive presentation but as an active terrain of inner conflicts and transformations. Through thoughtful work with the actress, precise distribution of rhythms, and a carefully conceived visual and sound flow, he created a performance in which an intimate monologue becomes an exploration of the space between introspection and stage tension. The direction demonstrates exceptional consistency in realizing the concept and courage in its execution.”
The “Dragan Jovičić” Award for Best Actress was awarded to Dijana Vidušin for her outstanding performance in the monodrama The Human Voice:
“In this demanding form, which rests on a single acting energy, Vidušin demonstrates astonishing precision, emotional exposure, and complete control of stage expression. Thanks to the courage and subtlety of her performance, she creates a deeply moving and artistically rounded stage portrait that is one of the most outstanding achievements of the festival program.”
Dijana Vidušin also won the Croatian Theatre Award in the category Best Actress in Drama – Leading Female Role for the play The Human Voice.
The play The Human Voice is created by an artistic team consisting of: translator from French Urša Raukar-Gamulin, dramaturge Tijana Grumić, set designer Andreja Rondović, costume designer Velimirka Damjanović, composer Nevena Glušica, lighting designer Elvis Butković, and choreographers Matija Ferlin and Andrea Gotovina.
