Wilde’s novel about the obsessive relationship with beauty, the outer shell and what lies beneath it is not only a great read, but also a civilizational and cultural turning point in the way we think about and understand the fundamental values of our age.

In his only novel, Wilde writes about sin and conscience, the dangers of the big city, and the anxiety of the soul.

At a time of obsession with selfies and influencers, the scientific community recognized the so-called Dorian Gray Syndrome (DGS) in 2001, characterized by an individual’s obsession with their own appearance to worrying proportions, along with the inability to accept aging and maturity.

Director Nataša Radulović dramatized the novel using a fragmentary structure, interrupting the storyline with discussions on morality. A parallel theme of art and its relationship to reality develops in the play, as well as the tragic, inexplicable relationship between the artist and their work — the only aspect that creates an emotional bond between the audience and the stage. The painter’s struggle to understand a piece of art that surpasses him.
