The Glass Neck by Biljana Srbljanović takes place in a Belgrade family, where, as it often happens, three generations live under the same roof. In the family atmosphere of heightened tensions, everyone bears the legacy of their youth. The Chekhovian complex relationships among members of this unusual family community are overlaid with author’s profound insight of the social situation, from generation to generation. The painful realism of the piece, commissioned by the Yugoslav Drama Theatre, does not diminish its wit. On the contrary: the play successfully juggles contradictory emotions where hilarious laughter gives way to sad truths.
