At the centre of My Sad Monsters, subtitled as “a drama diary”, is Mate, “a playwright and musician”. The play ingeniously pair theatricality and hyper-eventfulness with intimacy and realism (…) In addition to being a dramatic showdown with personal demons, My Sad Monsters under Vito Taufer`s direction is very much interested in the social context, in the collective pain and injustice, and the knots that we have yet to untie…

…the play also toys with the dramatic form, because one moment we are in someone’s life and a second later in a soap opera woven from the fabric of that same life. The director has managed to finely tune this investigation of theatre and reality, because if (Matišić’s) Men of Wax was a dramatic suite in three movements, then this is a much more intimate piece.
