Kleist's work is close to the folk theatre. In the subtitle, he names The Broken Jug a "jolly game". If we view Kleist and the time in which he wrote, alongside unparalleled notables such as Goethe and Schiller, he actually represents an opposite and a lonely, individual voice, which unlike most of his contemporaries does not start from romantic subjects, but uses the indirect, lower path, from the folk ... he starts from dissecting the entire society: from its lowest layer, as well as people from the very top of the government.
From the Conversation with director Igor Vuk Torbica in the programme book
"... the issue of corruption and abuse of position and power is probably as old as mankind itself, so we tried not to place the plot in some concrete time period, even though, on the level of meaning, comparisons with the current moment are certainly noticeable."
From the Conversation with dramaturge Tamara Bijelic in the programme book
Igor Vuk Torbica knows the mechanics of humour very well, he also knows how and when to cause maximum effect with minimum means, especially when he has such talented and inspired actors at disposal.
