Even though created as early as in 1890, the heroine of Ibsen's drama Hedda Gabler is an exceptionally modern character, with pronounced individuality and resolute faith in the freedom of personal choice.
Hedda represents a woman of unclear past, chaotic present and completely uncertain future. We know only as much about her as can be found out in one day and one night.
The drama was reduced to a chamber situation of a city salon as the place of poor, yet calculated decisions and it is thematically part of the cycle of last Ibsen's dramas characterised by pessimism, melancholy and, finally, death.

"Superior play, superior Hedda."
