E. Lubitsch: WHEN I WAS DEAD
Director and scene design: Diego de Brea
Cast: Alojz Svete, Janez Škof, Jernej Šugman, Boris Mihalj
The great German director Ernst Lubitsch made his film When I Was Dead at the very beginning of his career, in 1916. Considered lost for a long time, the film was rediscovered in Slovenia in 1994 by the employees of the Slovenian film archives.
When I Was Dead is a play meant to be consumed for fun (...), it talks about a husband who – fed up with his married life – chooses to fake his own death. However, driven by jealousy, he returns home to his wife and mother-in-law, where, disguised as a servant, he chases suitors. This situation comedy rivets the audience with a myriad of original scenic solutions that fill up the story without running in place (...)
All roles, even the female ones, are played by men. It's a trusted formula for abundance of comic effects, queer aesthetics and identity policies, which unpretentiously make the material fresh and contemporary. This is a performance made in the spirit of Lubitsch, characterised by a mixture of sexy humour and virtual shrewdness (...)

The performance has been awarded on a number of festivals.
