There is a time for tragedy. There is a time for comedy. The play Cyclopes offers a time for something in between. The only preserved Euripides's Satyr play, Cyclopes has been staged for the first time; because of its undetermined genre it requires a lot of courage to be put on the scene. Based on the well known episode from Homer’s Odyssey, Euripides's Satyr play Cyclopes can today be read as a genre which simultaneously underlines moral weaknesses of the individual by using irony, exposes the hypocrisy of the times by putting it into perspective and criticizes the society through satire, justifying its weaknesses in the same time.
On a borderline between comedy and tragedy, satire and slapstick, without sublime and divine creatures, without exposing big truths, but full of travesty, parody and loud dance, with the help of the rock band Let3, Cyclopes becomes a spectacle which invites you to join the theatrical event of the year.
From the programme of the performance
Elements of circus artistry, hard rock and pure provocation in a very good expression are Cyclopes’ strong points; but who knows, maybe you'll find something of your own that will associate you with this unusual performance.
Ivan Milatić, Moja Rijeka
We dealt with all of the aspects of the story about Odyssey’s landing on the island of Cyclopes and his encounter with the cannibal.
We have inserted the beautiful Ode to the ram from Homer; we tried to decipher the scenes with satyrs in a modern way. What you can see in the performance is just the surface of a boiling pool of knowledge and skills poured into a hard physical performance. Our times despise humanistic culture, despite the facts that without it, it is impossible to understand the world in all its complexity.
Ivica Buljan, from an interview by Anđelo Jurkas, Vip.hr
