FIRST NIGHT, 27. 12. 2008.

Death and the Dervish is a mature work. Its powerful and persuasive wisdom lies not in the philosophical uniqueness of Nurudin’s contemplation, but in the poetic appropriateness of the language, in the tone suitable to the modus of the being and its life context. The setting is transferred from the 18th century to the 1950s Sarajevo after WW II and the new state.

On the deepest level the dervish may represent a new myth about the present life... Constant struggles, ideological rifts, nationalism and power frenzy have destroyed the humanity's structure to the point where people have lost all heart for life or trust in other people. Manipulated for political goals, the modern Man feels all natural instincts to be wasted and basic human emotions extinct.

While they are talking, we have a premonition of what they are being silent about. This regime of omission, communication through well-composed blind spots is what characterizes style and thought of Meša Selimović.
